A World Dropper’s Travel Journal
Welcome to my game-travel journal. Like a regular travel journal. But this one is all about games! It’s about all the worlds I visit in games. As well as, the characters I meet and those I have the pleasure pretending to be!
Games have come a long way since I first started playing.
As a child of the late 70s, it was the arcade where I first fell in love with gaming. Those were fun and social times. Hanging out at the beachside arcade was one of my favourite places. I was one of the few girls who wanted to play the games. It wasn’t just about flirting with the boys. I wanted to compete with them. I wanted to be on their team. Ok, and flirt. Maybe a little bit!
I was lucky. My dad had an interest in these new personal computing devices that were hitting the market in the 80s. So I had a PC at home from early on. At the time, my introduction to PCs and PC gaming started on a Vic 20. For the geeks in the room it had 8 KB total memory, where 5 KB was usable. It used cassette tapes for program storage. It had a TV for the monitor. And this was before Windows, so we needed to learn the Basic programming language to use it!
I say I was lucky to have access to a home PC from an early age, before they were popular, and that is true. It’s something I’m very grateful for to this day. But I did miss out on the golden age of console gaming as a child. I used consoles when visiting friends who had them. Even though none of my friends cared about gaming the same way I did! It wasn’t until I graduated college that I also bought my first console… the PlayStation 1. I’ve been a one-console woman ever since.
Over the years PCs became faster and more user friendly.
They also became more prevalent in mainstream. Which meant the gaming catalogue grew too! Nowadays the gaming industry is bigger than Hollywood. We have personal PCs with us everyday, everywhere we go, contained within our cell phones. And I’m still here playing away! I still have my original PS2-PS4 and most of the games for each. All usable. My current main squeeze is my PS4.
They are entire worlds waiting to be discovered. They are characters to journey with, care about, and support. They are puzzles to solve, enemies to face and challenges to overcome. Not only are they entertainment, but games are good for my mental health. They work my brain when I don’t want to zone out with a TV show. They encourage team play, co-operation and strategic planning/thinking.
Games have been a huge part of my life so far and will continue to be until I’m not able to play anymore.
I’ve played hundreds of games. Some I remember. Many I don’t. And I’m sad about the ones I don’t remember! So this blog is a place for me to keep track of the games I play. I’ll also share my thoughts on them and might share a stream, playthrough or fun clips. This will be a virtual photo album and journal for me. In another 20 years I want to look back and remember the good times I had, solo and with my friends.
So I say again… welcome fellow world droppers! You are most welcome here. I look forward to the journey of making this blog. To playing more games. And to meeting fellow travelers along the way. Because life is better in multiplayer!
